Energy payback time or EPBT is a solar panel calculation to determine the amount of time it takes for your solar system to generate the amount of energy equivalent to the amount that it took to produce the system.
What does that mean exactly? During the manufacture and installation of your solar panels, there is a carbon footprint. The energy, materials, manufacturing process, fuel costs to transport, and the materials used to install the panels cause a carbon footprint.
Your solar system has an EPBT in which the solar panel system will have produced enough clean energy to "pay back" the energy used during the manufacturing process in the first place.
For example, an 11 kW solar plant that produces 22.8MWh per year with a lifetime total of 570MWh, uses 48.83 MWh to do so. Thus, it will take 2.14 years for the solar power system to produce the same amount of energy that was used to assemble it.
After 2.14 years, you PAY FORWARD clean, renewable energy back to the environment, for the remaining lifespan of your panels, nearly another 23 years of paying it forward.
